My name is David Johnson. Along with my wife Dana and family members, we operate Nuview Farms Ltd., a dairy and 400-acre cash crop operation near Thorndale, Ontario. 

In 2017, we updated our dairy operation by constructing a modern free-stall facility utilizing robotic technology to milk our 70-cow registered, purebred Holstein herd. Out former dairy barn was renovated to house young cattle and our purebred Haflingers, which are a perfect compliment to our family-farm operation.

Owning horses have always been important to the Johnson family. Although tractors had replaced horse-power, when my father’s family moved to our current location in 1960, they drove their team of workhorses from their former farm that had been annexed by the City of London. My father bought his first pony when he was 14 year-old and later when my sisters and I were growing up, Dad purchased an experienced team of draft-pony mares. That team proved to be our “driver education” and each year they were bred to a local Haflinger stallion.

That was the beginning of my association with the Haflinger breed. The stallion, Stockwell, was owned by Ken Dewhurst. Ken and his daughter Beth Deslippe invited me to accompany them to Haflinger shows and sales. During my first year, I competed in the youth showmanship classes and I was “hooked”! Ken and Beth taught me to appreciated the diversity of the Haflinger and its genetics, two attributes of the breed that I continue to value. It was at those shows that I met the Thiel family of Zurich, Ontario, who have become lifelong friends and mentors. At the age of 14, I had saved enough money to buy my first purebred Haflinger, “Huron Cheila” from Stewart Thiel. Cheila was a tremendous broodmare, producing 10 fillies and 3 stallion foals. Cheila lived 28 great years and has over 80 descendants throughout Canada.

Each year, Dana and I try to travel to about a dozen shows and other promotional events with our Haflingers. For many years, I have been fortunate to accompany local Percheron and Belgian breeders to shows and sales, both here in Ontario and into the United States.

I believe in giving back to our agricultural industry. During my years at the University of Guelph, I was involved in several college committees and graduated in 1996 as the graduation-class President. I have been a 4-H member and leader, President of the Middlesex County Holstein Association, the Thorndale Agricultural Society, the Middlesex Dairy Producers’ Committee and the Ontario Haflinger Association. As a result of being involved with the Haflinger and Holstein breeds, as well as other agricultural organizations, I have been rewarded with many friendships and travel opportunities across Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. 

I look forward to having the opportunity to work with the Canadian Haflinger Association board of directors and its members.

Je m'appelle David Johnson. Avec mon épouse Dana et les membres de ma famille, nous exploitons Nuview Farms Ltd., une exploitation laitière et de cultures commerciales de 400 acres près de Thorndale, en Ontario.

En 2017, nous avons modernisé notre exploitation laitière en construisant une installation moderne en stabulation libre utilisant la technologie robotique pour traire notre troupeau Holstein de race pure enregistré de 70 vaches. Notre ancienne étable laitière a été rénovée pour accueillir de jeunes bovins et nos Haflingers de race pure, qui complètent parfaitement notre exploitation agricole familiale.

Posséder des chevaux a toujours été important pour la famille Johnson. Bien que les tracteurs aient remplacé la puissance, lorsque la famille de mon père a déménagé dans notre emplacement actuel en 1960, ils ont conduit leur attelage de chevaux de trait depuis leur ancienne ferme annexée par la ville de Londres. Mon père a acheté son premier poney quand il avait 14 ans et plus tard, alors que mes sœurs et moi grandissions, papa a acheté une équipe expérimentée de juments de trait. Cette équipe s'est avérée être notre « formation de conducteur » et chaque année, ils étaient accouplés à un étalon Haflinger local.

Ce fut le début de mon association avec la race Haflinger. L'étalon, Stockwell, appartenait à Ken Dewhurst. Ken et sa fille Beth Desslippe m'ont invité à les accompagner aux défilés et ventes Haflinger. Lors de ma première année, j’ai participé aux cours de mise en scène des jeunes et j’étais « accro » ! Ken et Beth m'ont appris à apprécier la diversité du Haflinger et sa génétique, deux attributs de la race que je continue d'apprécier. C'est lors de ces spectacles que j'ai rencontré la famille Thiel de Zurich, en Ontario, qui sont devenus des amis et des mentors pour la vie.

À l'âge de 14 ans, j'avais économisé  suffisamment d'argent pour acheter mon  premier Haflinger de race pure,  Huron   Cheila, de Stewart Thiel. Cheila était une   formidable poulinière, produisant 10   pouliches et 3 poulains étalons. Cheila a  vécu 28 belles années et compte plus de  80 descendants partout au Canada.

Chaque année, Dana et moi essayons de   nous rendre à une douzaine de spectacles   et autres événements promotionnels avec  nos Haflingers. Pendant de nombreuses  années, j'ai eu la chance d'accompagner  des éleveurs percherons et belges locaux   à des expositions et des ventes, tant ici en   Ontario qu'aux États-Unis.

Je crois qu’il faut redonner à notre   industrie agricole. Au cours de mes   années à l'Université de Guelph, j'ai  participé à plusieurs comités collégiaux et  j'ai obtenu mon diplôme en 1996 en tant  que président de la promotion. J’ai été   membre et leader des 4-H, président de la   Middlesex County Holstein Association, de  la Thorndale Agricultural Society, du Middlesex Dairy Producers’ Committee et de l’Ontario Haflinger Association. Grâce à mon implication auprès des races Haflinger et Holstein, ainsi qu'au sein d'autres Organisations agricoles, j'ai été récompensé par de nombreuses amitiés et opportunités de voyages à travers le Canada, les États-Unis et le Royaume-Uni.

J'ai hâte d'avoir l'occasion de travailler avec le conseil d'administration de l'Association canadienne Haflinger et ses membres.

Hello, my name is Mathieu Gagné, I have 

been in the Haflinger world since the 90s. 

I bought my first stallion in 1996, Montana 

du crin Blanc. Then I gravitated around the 

Haflinger club in Quebec. Subsequently, 

I trained as a driving instructor in 2009 

and in long reins in France thereafter. I 

have a very great knowledge of genealogy. 

My goal is to show that Haflingers are as 

athletic as other breeds in competition. 

For several years I have had my own 

breeding program with 3 stallions of 

lineage B, M and W. And I am starting 

artificial insemination this year. So I am 

applying as a representative of Quebec.

Bonjour, je me présente Mathieu Gagné , 

je suis dans le monde du haflinger depuis 

les années 90s. J’ai acheté mon premier 

étalon en 1996, Montana du crin Blanc. 

Ensuite j’ai gravité autour du club haflinger 

du québec. Par la suite, je me suis formé 

comme instructeur d’attelage en 2009 et en 

longues rênes en France par la suite. 

J’ai une très grande connaissance des 

généalogie. Mon but étant de montrer que 

les haflingers sont aussi sportifs que les autres races en concours. Depuis quelques années je possède mon propre élevage avec 3 étalons de lignée B, M et W et je commence l’insémination artificielle cette année. Donc je pose ma candidature comme représentant du Québec.

My name is Becky Vissers. My husband and I have a farm north of Bowmanville Ontario. I have a riding school and boarding facility as well as raise registered boer goats, corridale and Oxford sheep and horses. Within those 12 horses we own 4 are registered haflingers and one is my grade haflinger mare as well as her 2023 quarter horse cross. Myself as well as my students compete with the haflingers in breed fairs and in the hunter jumper shows. This year I hope to do more combined driving events with Carissa, my registered mare. I also compete with my quarter horse on the Ontario reining horse shows and this year I hope to take my 4 year old haflinger mare to compete in the ranch riding classes.  I have sat on the Canadian Meat Goat Association board of directors for 7 years then a year off and just completed my 8th year as the president.

Je m'appelle Becky Vissers. Mon mari et moi avons une ferme au nord de Bowmanville, en Ontario. J'ai une école d'équitation et un internat et j'élève des chèvres boer enregistrées, des moutons et des chevaux corridale et Oxford. Parmi ces 12 chevaux que nous possédons, 4 sont des haflingers enregistrés et l'un est ma jument haflinger de qualité ainsi que son croisement quarter horse 2023. Mes élèves et moi-même sommes en compétition avec les Haflingers dans les foires de race et dans les concours de chasse et de saut d'obstacles. Cette année, j'espère faire davantage d'épreuves d'attelage combiné avec Carissa, ma jument inscrite. Je participe également avec mon quarter horse aux concours hippiques de reining de l'Ontario et cette année, j'espère emmener ma jument haflinger de 4 ans participer aux classes d'équitation du ranch. J'ai siégé au conseil d'administration de l'Association canadienne de la viande et de la chèvre pendant 7 ans, puis un an de congé et je viens de terminer ma 8e année en tant que président.
